Mesquite Tree Care

How to maintenance your Mesquite tree

Mesquite Prosopis glandulosa Deciduous Medium, 30 feet + Very drought resistant; filtered shade allows turf underneath; lacy spreading form; cream yellow flower matures into a long tan pod in late summer.

Add extre caution while trimming this type ot tree. Most mesquite trees in Tucson have very thorney branches and have been proven painful to trim in most events!

P.chilensis tends to have a longer winter dormancy period than P. alba. Most South American mesquite in Phoenix are hybrids of P. chilensis and alba. South American hybrid mesquites are currently very popular locally and make excellent summer shade trees if cultured correctly. Always select thorn less variants that are cutting grown. Superior selections such as the cultivar 'Rio Salado' are now being offered by local wholesale nurseries. Mesquite trees produce much litter such as the obligatory carpet of seed pods in July. Young container-grown hybrid mesquite trees, less than 5 years in the landscape, readily blow over during summer monsoon storms if they have been heavily drip irrigated and emitters are positioned close to tree trunk, or if they are grown as a lawn tree. Young trees should be staked securely and trained to develop a central leader. Chilean mesquite produces frequent crossed branches and grows water sprouts around pruning wounds. Much genetic variation and local hybridization with P. alba makes identification using only phenotypic characters difficult.
